Archaeology at Epworth Old Rectory

DATES:

10:00am - 16:30

As part of our ‘Out of the Box: unlocking collections at Epworth Old Rectory’ project, made possible by National Lottery players, we are delivering a series of archaeology excavations at the Old Rectory.
We are looking for community volunteers to work alongside staff and archaeologists to help us excavate trenches in the Croft (the sheep field behind the Rectory) and the gardens to uncover ‘hidden’ stories of the Old Rectory. Thanks to a local metal detectorist we have already found fascinating objects such a 17th century crotal bell, a coin from the 1377 and 18th century shoe buckles.
We will be holding digs on the following weekends:
Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August
Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August
No experience is necessary as we have archaeologists and experienced volunteers on hand to assist. Spaces to take part in the dig are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. Spaces to take part in the dig are divided up into 1 ½ hour slots. You can book on as one family unit (up to three children and two adults per family). One slot per family only. If spaces are full we can put you on a reserve list in case of any cancellations.
Please see below for the time slots:
10:30 – 11:30
11:30 – 13:00
13:30 – 15:00
15:00 – 16:30
The dig will involve helping to excavate trenches and process any finds discovered.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Please email Anya Johnson (Visits and Collections Manager) to book your place on vcm@epwortholdrectory.org.uk. Please specify which date and time slot you prefer – if the space is taken another will be offered. Once all spaces are full you will be invited to go on a reserve list in case of cancellations.
If there aren’t any spaces available or you don’t want to take part in the dig we welcome visitors to observe. You’ll be able to watch how a dig takes place and be there if we discover any fascinating finds. Refreshments will be served throughout the day.
Participation in the digs is completely free as part of our project ‘Out of the Box’ funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. A huge thanks to National Lottery players who have made this project possible.
