Projects Donations Have Helped to Fund
Putting the Hearth Back into the Home
In 2013 we undertook a project to transform the fireplaces in the Entrance Hall and Susanna’s Kitchen. As the Old Rectory had been a working rectory up until the 1950s there had been many changes made to the house since the Wesleys lived here. We knew that the original fireplaces were hidden behind years of plaster and two 1950s wooden-framed fireplaces.
As the years were stripped away the original Wesley fireplaces began to emerge. The large inglenook of the Entrance Hall revealed bricks that came from the fireplace of the original rectory, which burnt down in 1709. In the kitchen a large, three alcove fireplace was discovered. This will have been the Wesleys’ main cooking range. Above the kitchen fireplace we also discovered an eighteenth century shoe that had been bricked into the wall – an old superstition believed to ward off bad luck.
Through this project we also restored the chimney, making it secure for centuries to come.
This project has taught us a great deal about the house and how it would have looked when the Wesleys lived here. In the years to come we hope to undertake more projects to restore the Old Rectory to its eighteenth century appearance. These projects cannot be undertaken without the generous donations of our supporters. We would be grateful of all the support you can provide. We hope to preserve the Old Rectory for the enjoyment and education of future generations.
