The ‘Stump Bed’

The ‘stump bed’ is typical of the time and currently on show in the Best Chamber.

The holes show where ropes would have supported the straw mattress.

This ‘Bolton Quilt’ shown was made by the Bolton sisters of Oxford, with whom John stayed on his travels.
