At the Old Rectory we welcome any group or individual undertaking their own pilgrimage or seeking a tranquil place to visit on their journey.
“Pilgrimage” means different things to different people. It could be:
- A transformational journey, during which significant change takes place.
- A physical journey, but one that is also cognitive and emotional.
- Inclusive – there are ways in which it can work for all.
- A search for God.
- Intentional in the mind of the organiser, but not all participants have to buy into every aspect in order for it to be pilgrimage.
“Pilgrimage is far more than making a physical journey. It is being prepared to allow that restlessness, which is in every human soul, to entice us away from our security in search of something deeper, a clearer vision of the God who calls us to his service.” (Canon Stephen Shipley).
You may wish to make your own pilgrimage to Epworth Old Rectory and experience the peace and tranquility that our house and gardens have to offer. Christian pilgrims may also like to “bring a friend” and intentionally create a pilgrimage with a relaxed missional element. You may also like to share food and drink with companions there or venture further to Wesley Memorial Church or St Andrews Church, both in Epworth, to take part in communal worship.
There are a number of circular walking routes from Epworth that you may like to experience before reaching the Old Rectory. A lovely 6.4 mile route, which passes the Rectory and returns via the Church, might be a route you would like to try in addition to your visit.
