The mobbing of John Wesley at Wednesbury

A black and white print depicting John Wesley standing in the middle of a mob. He wears clerical dress and holds his right hand on his chest. The scene is set in a street. The story is based on the incident described in Charles Wesley's journal. The Staffordshire town of Wednesbury was the scene of the worst anti-Methodist riots of the period. The local Anglican Vicar encouraged the disturbances, which lasted intermittently for over six months with little interference from the secular authorities.
