On revisiting his native place in 1742, the Revd John Wesley, desired to preach in Epworth Church, wherein his father had for many years officiated as rector of the parish. But the curate refused him the use of the pulpit whereupon it was announced, that, as Mr Wesley was not permitted to preach in the church, he would preach in the church yard. “Accordingly J Came” he says “and found such a congregation as J believe Epworth never saw before. J stood near the east end of the church upon my father’s tombstone and cried: the Kingdom of Heaven is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” For seven successive evenings he preached upon that tombstone, and in no place did he even preach with greater effect. “Lamentations” he says “ and great groanings were heard , go bowing their hearts so and on every side, as with one accord they lifted up their voices and wept aloud; several dropt down as dead and among the rest, such a cry was heard of sinners groaning for the righteousness of faith, as almost drowned my voice but, many of these soon lifted up their heads with joy, and broke out into thanksgiving being assured they now had the desire of their soul the forgiveness of their sins.”
